What to Expect from a Kids Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Appointment

Pelvic floor physiotherapy treatment always sounds intimidating for families. Making sure that everyone feels safe and comfortable throughout the appointment is my top priority. During an initial pediatric pelvic floor physiotherapy appointment, my goal is to get a detailed history of your child’s bladder and bowel problems, understand any relevant medical history, and get to you them (and you!). I will also do a visual assessment of your child’s posture, breathing pattern, and work to understand how their core and pelvic floor muscles are working. I don’t do any internal assessments with children, and am always working to highlight the importance of consent and safety.

At the end of your initial assessment, your child will likely have some exercise ‘homework’, and we will discuss what other options might be available.  This might include:

  • Pelvic floor muscle home exercise training
  • Tips for easier trips to the toilet and strategies to improve emptying
  • Bladder scheduling to regulate voiding and urgency
  • Constipation management strategies
  • Bedwetting management programs designed to minimize the impact of enuresis on your family
  • Education about pelvic floor anatomy, bladder and bowel function, urge management strategies and more!
